The work was born from the death of my daughter to cancer. As a mother, this has been the most excruciating pain in my soul, unlike anything I have ever experienced in my life. I entered a journey I never wished to walk, and now I must learn to live this new life without her. “Life Without You” becomes the space in which I attempt to navigate the reconstruction of this new life and express this new love language.
Each image is paired with a Haiku. The 5-7-5 syllable structure deliberately restricts how I express my feelings, but it mirrors my circumstances. It forces me to create with restrictions and limitations. The expression of love for my daughter now is restricted by her absence. The Haiku becomes the place where my heart speaks, my photography is the foundation of my voice and my canvas, and my painting is the final touch that completes this new language of love. I must be creative to express my love for her.
